Late game faux comeback belies exactly what Texas A&M basketball fans feared most

We thought this season was different, but Texas A&M basketball now finds themselves staring down the barrel of the exact thing we thought they'd avoid.

Tenacious Texas A&M basketball fights back in final minutes, but ultimately fall to Vanderbilt; Now staring directly at 5-game skid

Texas A&M basketball has, over the years that Buzz Williams has been the coach, had a curious and infuriating habit every single year. It's hard to predict when it happens, but every year since Buzz arrived, the Aggies have hit a stretch wherein they lose some completely inexplicable games.

Think of Wofford a few years ago, or the Arkansas loss on the Tramon Mark last-second bucket. Both of those frustrating losses came in the midst of a stretch where the Aggies don't play good basketball at all.

We thought that this team was different— that they had evaded such a stretch. Now, though, at the most crucial time of the season, that old dragon is rearing its head.

Texas A&M basketball, with this loss to Vanderbilt, is now on a three-game losing streak. Their next two games come against Florida and Auburn, both currently ranked in the top 5.

Unless a huge upset occurs— which is not out of the realm of possibility at all— the Aggies are going to ride a five-game losing streak into their final matchup against LSU on the road. And with the way that A&M has played away from Reed this season, that could easily turn into six.

It's hard to diagnose just what's wrong with this team at the moment. Things just don't feel as easy as they did earlier in the season, especially on the offensive end. Carter, Obaseki, Washington, and Hefner all went scoreless in this one, while Wade continues to struggle mightily since hitting that game-winner against Missouri.

The final score looks close, but it is only so thanks to the Aggies mounting a furious and improbable comeback that involved untold numbers of fouls late in the game. In reality, the Commodores were up 10 with under two minutes to go before the Ags began to foul.

Maybe the Aggies pull out of this nosedive. Maybe they can turn things around in the SEC tournament. We've seen them change things on a dime in previous seasons.

But that had better happen fast. They're assured of a spot in March Madness, without a doubt, but their seeding keeps dropping by the day. If this season goes out with a whimper— this season— then it could mean curtains for the Buzz era in Aggieland.
