Texas A&M is a popular pick for the playoff early on in 2026 projections, based on how Mike Elko has turned the culture and program around in College Station. His work through the transfer portal has the Aggies on the verge of a big season once more in this upcoming season after making the CFP for the first time last year.
Though it's way too early to know anything for sure, and the Aggies definitely have a tougher schedule in the upcoming year, the Aggies have been a staple when considering what the 12-team field may look like. After hosting the Miami Hurricanes in a round one game last year and falling just short, Texas A&M fans are hungry to get another matchup on campus in 2026.
According to On3's Brett McMurphy's latest projections, that's exactly what will happen. Not just that, though: the Aggies, according to this prognostication, would be welcoming in an old foe that has gotten a little bit too big for their britches lately.
Texas A&M projected to match up with Texas Tech in CFP first round
The Aggies were in position to host as the seven seed last year, but McMurphy has them as an eight-seed in his latest prediction. The team coming to Kyle Field to face off with the Aggies? The Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Texas Tech has quite a bit on their plate right now that has thrown their prospective College Football Playoff participation into jeopardy. Transfer QB Brendan Sorsby is all but guaranteed to miss the season after revelations about past sports betting activity have come to light, which means that CFB's new kid on the block will have to look elsewhere for a quarterback.
Of course, this is the Big 12 we're talking about. With the talent on the lines that Tech has (thanks, Cody Campbell), they could still coast through to the CFP in taht conference. If this matchup comes to fruition, though, they could meet quite the problematic matchup in College Station.
Aggie fans would no doubt love to humble Tech fans if given the chance here. Though every Texas A&M fan would love to go undefeated, getting a chance to bring the Red Raiders down a peg is not a bad consolation prize.
