Texas A&M's offensive performance against Alabama, at least when compared to the rest of the season, gives fans a lot more to be optimistic about going into the final four games of the season. What's more, it should serve to quiet down a lot of the noise that has been surrounding Marcel Reed as a quarterback, as he looked a lot better throwing the ball than we've seen in any other road game this year.
Even so, the existence of that noise, and the way things started in this game for the Aggies, means that there are going to be questions in the press conference about a potential quarterback change. Brady Hart's name has been said a lot in A&M circles over the past few weeks, and there are still plenty of fans who want to see him taking starter's snaps.
While Elko has fielded a couple of questions about the quarterback situation so far this season, when Reed took the podium after tonight's loss, the assembled media decided to ask his opinion on the noise. For whatever you can say about Reed, he always gives the right answer when he's in a presser like this— and this situation, thorny as it was, was no different.
Marcel Reed answers thorny questions about Brady Hart and potential QB change as best as he could have
Here's what Reed had to say when asked about the potential of a quarterback change in this game.
Marcel Reed on the A&M staff warming up Brady Hart: "I really wasn't aware if my leash was short or not. It's up to me when my name is called to go out there and play. If they decide they want to go with Brady, I am right behind him, supporting him because I know how good of a…

Hart was seen beginning to warm up after Reed threw a second interception early on in the game, but Reed piloted the Aggies the rest of the way against the Tide, where his legs were a key part of the offensive attack. For a guy whose mentality has been questioned time and time again this season, he is at least answering this question in a way that suggests having the exact right frame of mind.
For the first time this season, Reed looked like a guy who was not putting an immense amount of pressure on himself to be perfect— he was ripping throws rather than second-guessing, running the ball at the right time, and more. Again, the bar against which we are judging here is not the highest, but if you're looking for reasons for encouragement, this is certainly something to file away.
If Reed were worried that his back was against the wall and the coaching staff was a few plays away from subbing in Hart, then he didn't show it at all. Rather, he demonstrated exactly the mentality he outlined here: if he's called upon, he has to go do the best he can, and if Brady is called upon, then he'll support him 100%.
For as badly as this season has gone in many ways in College Station, this is the furthest thing from a fracturing locker room right now. This is a team that has each other's backs and are moving with the right frame of mind, and Marcel is demonstrating that in the way he navigated this question. It's not easy to address this kind of thing, but Reed did the exact right thing with this response.
