Even with a defensively-minded head coach like Mike Elko, there’s always a special relationship between a quarterback and the team’s head man. Mike Elko and Marcel Reed have been working together closely for two years now, and entering year three, there are a lot of high hopes for what these two can accomplish on the field.
Despite everything that no. 10 in the maroon and white has accomplished, there’s still a lot of doubt out there about him from the general college football watching public— with some members of the media even seeming to target him in particular to put down. That’s unfair in a lot of ways, and it shows that Reed and Elko both should enter this upcoming year with a chip on their shoulder in order to disprove narratives like that.
That can’t happen if they’re out of sync, of course— if the head man wants something different out of his QB than what he can actually provide, or if the QB doesn’t trust the plan that the coach puts into place, then things will crash and burn quickly. Fortunately for Aggie fans, their combo of Elko and Reed are more than just on the same page— and that comes straight from Reed’s father, who talked about the relationship between the two on a recent podcast appearance.

Marcel’s dad talks extensively about how much Reed loves coach Elko, specifically that Elko is a “straight shooter.” This is nothing new for Aggie fans, of course— it’s well-known that the head man has no time for coach speak. He gives it to you the way that it is, no ifs, ands, or buts— and that appeals greatly to the Texas A&M fanbase.
Coach Reed also speaks about the standard that Elko expects out of his players— another marker of a really healthy culture in the locker room. He doesn’t treat anyone any different because of their star ranking or status among the fanbase; he keeps the same energy with everyone on the team— something that gains a lot of respect among the players.
For whatever (unfair) lack of confidence there is in Reed among college football fans, there is a growing respect for Mike Elko. He’s become quickly regarded as one of the top head coaches in the sport, and he has a chance to build on that reputation with a big year this fall.
Reed can disprove some of those national narratives along the way— under the tutelage of Elko, who will be doing his level best to make sure the nation sees exactly how talented Marcel actually is. With the promotion of new OC Holmon Wiggins, Reed’s talents can be more fully unlocked— at least, that’s what Texas A&M fans are hoping for.
