Marcel Reed’s place among college football’s most important players is well-earned

Marcel Reed is the number one most important player for the Aggies in this upcoming season as they hope to make it back to the College Football Playoff. As his progress and development goes— and as his consistency goes— so will go the entire Aggie team; when he struggled last year, Texas A&M didn’t stand a chance, and when he shone, opponents couldn’t hold a candle.

With the Aggies set to field one of the best rosters in the country top to bottom, Reed’s ability is one of the big storylines around the country this fall— can he take the step that the Aggies need to get them to where they want to be? That in mind, it’s no surprise to see that Marcel has been named as one of the top ten most important players in the country for this upcoming season.

Bill Connelly recently made a list of the top 40 most important players for the 2026 college football season, one that is (appropriately) filled to the brim with quarterbacks, with the Aggies’ signal caller chief among them.

Here’s what he had to say about no. 10 in the maroon and white:

"Reed was like a more dangerous [John] Mateer: His mistakes were just as cataclysmic -- he had an even higher interception rate and lower completion rate, but he also made more big-time passes and rushed for more yards in far fewer attempts (while taking far fewer hits). He made mistakes in bunches, seemingly struggling to move past one before making another. If he can iron that out with more experience, he should have everything he needs to make another CFP push."

He does an appropriate job highlighting just how dynamic Reed was last season, while also mentioning just how boom-or-bust he is. That was the story of the season for Marcel, of course, as he was either really great for Texas A&M or he was awful.

There have been some coaching changes this offseason that could potentially help with that, as the former Aggie OC didn’t exactly play to Marcel’s strengths in those losses, and it showed. With Holmon Wiggins in the fold, Reed’s dynamic abilities could be even further highlighted, helping the entire team along the way.

We’ll have to see if Reed can live up to the massive expectations that are being placed on him in this preseason, but if the way he’s carrying himself and the way his teammates are talking about him are any indication, he’s ready to step up to the plate for this challenge. For whatever else you can say about Reed, he’s embracing the moment in a way that not many other Aggie quarterbacks have— and now we just need to see if it will pay off.
