Former Texas A&M football coach Mark Stoops to be honored with induction to Texas A&M football coaching hall of fame
One of the most legendary coaches in Texas A&M football history is finally getting his due. The Aggie athletic department announced today that Mark Stoops would be inducted into the Texas A&M athletics hall of fame.
“The impact that Coach Stoops had on our university is hard to quantify or put into words,” said AD Trev Alberts in the statement. “He truly left a mark that will be hard for fans to forget.”
This is a well-earned honor for Coach Stoops, whose time at A&M burned both brightly and quickly. His name will be forever revered by Aggie fans as a man who bravely stood in the gap between the Jimbo Fisher and Mike Elko eras of A&M football.
Reached for comment on this honor, Stoops— perhaps too overcome with emotion— declined to offer anything publicly. No doubt he'll have plenty to say at the sure-to-be upcoming press tour, though.
Stoops went beyond a simple coaching hire for the Aggies. His impact sparked numerous student movements, such as the well-known #StoopsOutKyleField. And who could forget the Stoops Dupe, a viral trend where students offer their friends football tickets before pulling them at the last moment and offering them to a guy at Duke.
The only question left at this point is where and when they'll place the statue. Those close to the artists working on the project of immortalizing coach Stoops say that there is a subtle ambiguity in his facial expression, such that it will be left to the observer to interpret whether he is excitedly packing his suitcase or disappointedly unpacking the same suitcase mere moments later.
Stoops never suffered a defeat at A&M, which is something that hardly any coach throughout history can say, and it's one of the factors that made this such an easy decision. This was a long time coming, and well-earned to boot.
