Miami’s Mark Matthews pursuit won’t be a concern for Mike Elko and Texas A&M

Texas A&M football now has a main challenger for the no. 1 class of the 2027 cycle, as the Miami Hurricanes have added their fifth five-star of the cycle following the commitment of the newly-reclassified A’mir Sears. He joins Donte Wright, Nick Lennear, Jaiden Bryant, and Israel Abrams, making the Aggies the only team in the country with more commits of this caliber.

With so much juice on the trail right now, the Miami faithful believe that they can pretty much get any player that their coaching staff wants right now— and that includes the Aggies’ top-ranked commitment in OT Mark Matthews, Matthews is a native of the Miami area, and it was a real coup for Mike Elko, Adam Cushing, and the Aggie staff to get his commitment over the hometown Canes.

There are a lot of reasons where it seems natural that Matthews would give a serious hearing to the Canes, and there’s been more than just a little bit of speculation on the part of the national media as to whether Cristobal will make a hard push. However, even if he does, the Aggies have nothing to fear— they are the top dog this recruiting cycle, as they will continue to show.

Texas A&M has nothing to fear from Miami eyeing Mark Matthews, despite continued efforts

Miami reporter EJ Holland wrote a story today about how the Canes are keeping up their pursuit of Matthews even now.

Matthews’ choice of the Aggies over the Hurricanes was one of the more dramatic upsets in recent recruiting memory, and the top-3 national prospect has continued to anchor the Aggies’ recruiting class up until this point. He’s never really given any indication that he’s wavering, but if there were a team that could accomplish something like that, it would be the Hurricanes.

However, even Cristobal’s crew is not going to be enough to sway Matthews. He’s as solid as anyone in the class, and whenever possible, he makes the trip up from South Florida to College Station to aid in recruiting other top talent to Aggieland.

The bond that has been formed between Matthews and the coaching staff— not to mention the Aggie fanbase at this point— is a profound one, and though there’s probably a lot of pressure on him from just living in Miami, he’s steadfast in his decision.

Mike Elko and company can weather whatever storm the Hurricanes cook up, and barring a complete disappointment of a 2026 season, there should be no reason at all for Aggie fans to worry. This won’t be the last time Miami reporters try to stir the pot about Matthews, but Aggie fans can rest assured that it’s clear skies ahead in this one.
