Mike Elko just achieved something Jimbo Fisher could never pull off in Aggieland

This is a further demonstration that the Aggies' new head man is the guy for this job.

Despite everything he accomplished at Texas A&M, Jimbo Fisher was never able to do what Mike Elko just pulled off with today's win over Auburn.

The former Aggie head coach had some banner years in College Station. The 2018 season finished with all-time great vibes, considering the seven overtime win over LSU and the destruction of NC State that the Aggies handed down in the bowl game. The 2020 season was obviously Jimbo's best, winning 8 straight games to finish the year and gaining the title of Orange Bowl Champions, notching their highest AP finish in far too long.

However, what Mike Elko just did was something that Fisher was never able to do: have his team be unblemished by a loss through four games. This year's Aggie squad was the first to do that since Kevin Sumlin's 2016 team was roaming Kyle Field, meaning it's been nearly ten years since an A&M team achieved that feat.

Back then, the Aggies had several luminaries on their team: Christian Kirk, Myles Garrett, and others all were donning the maroon and white in the precursor to their still-ongoing NFL careers. Though we don't know how many NFL players are on the current Aggie squad, they look like they certainly have a lot of talent that could play at the next level.

Today's win over Auburn was notable for several reasons, but it showed maybe more than anything that this team is learning how to deal with success. Jimbo's teams sometimes came on strong at the end of the year, but they had trouble sustaining momentum in a lot of seasons.

Fisher also often played top-shelf programs near the beginning of the yearβ€” no. 2 Clemson in 2018, no. 1 Clemson in 2019, and no. 2 Alabama in 2020β€” but Elko has done the same this season with his bout with the Fighting Irish, and he emerged victorious. Something really seems different about this team, and it's got a lot of Aggie fans excited about the possibilities going forward.
