It was a heck of a debut for many of the new faces on the Texas A&M football team, but Mike Elko made sure to give some love to one of his many running backs. Not many fans were boasting about this after the game, but Elko made sure to mention it anyway.
On KC Concepcion's punt return for a touchdown, there was a quiet detail during the return that fans might've missed at the time. Running back EJ Smith did more than his required assignment to block three guys during the play.
Elko made sure to highlight this during his weekly press conference, and his reaction meant everything to Smith and his incredible effort.
EJ Smith blocking three players on one play was everything to Mike Elko
Smith only had two carries for six yards, but that's not what Elko cares about.
“One of the greatest effort plays I’ve seen in my coaching career” - @CoachMikeElko

Smith even recapped the play on his own, including hilariously putting his body out and falling down right as Concepcion got to the goal line.
"I see the last dude. I was like, I can't let him touch KC, he's got to score. So, then I dove in front of him."
Elko putting Smith on a high pedestal might get him more playing time just because coaches love to see high effort plays like this. Even though the RB room is crowded, Smith has a special place on special teams.
Smith wears No. 22, just like his father Emmitt, the NFL's all-time leading rusher. He may not turn out to be like his dad, but it's hustle plays like this that fans and coaches remember when we think about sacrificing a body on the field for others.
