You have to admire players that maintain confidence, no matter the situation— but Aggie fans no doubt are raising an eyebrow at the recent comments emerging from one Missouri State player. Isaiah Villanueva, a captain for the Bears and a native of the state of Texas, recently made his bold stance on Saturday’s game pretty obvious in an interview ahead of their trip to Kyle Field:

For context, the Vegas line for this game currently sits at around 40 points or so in favor of the Aggies, so this is quite the prediction by the senior lineman. It’s also notable that Villanueva went to Katy Paetow high school, so he played alongside starting Texas A&M defensive tackle DJ Hicks— not only that, he had to go against him in practice every day.
It’s not only Hicks that Villanueva is familiar with, of course— Daymion Sanford, who should be starting in Saturday’s game after an extremely quick return from injury, was also a member of that Paetow team. No doubt both Hicks and Sanford have seen this comment by now and have it squarely in mind headed into Saturday’s game.

If nothing else, this should tell Aggie fans about the mindset that Missouri State is bringing into this game. The Bears are coming in hoping to do more than just put a respectable showing on the field— in the first game under their new regime, they are hoping to pull off a massive upset win over the Aggies.
Of course, in one sense, you understand that. But there’s a difference between confidence and bravado— and this may be a little more of the latter than the former by Villanueva. That’s all well and good to get your teammates charged up, though, but it’s also the kind of thing that can grab the attention of any Aggie player that may have been looking past this matchup.
You’d hope that there is no such player on this roster, but in honesty, when you open with a team like Missouri State, it’s more than possible that there is. This is a team that everyone would be shocked if the Aggies lost to, as much as some might like to see it, and the players on the team are not immune to a sentiment like that.
The Aggies had better be ready for the best shot the Bears have, in other words. Texas A&M may be coming into the season with a high ranking, but that number next to their name doesn’t mean anything if they come into games not ready to execute Mike Elko’s game plan.
We’ll see if Villanueva can keep the same energy after a full game of facing off with this Aggie defensive front— a tall task for even the best teams in the nation. Something tells me he won’t be quite as brash once the dust settles in this one late Saturday night.
