Oklahoma State has officially fired head coach Mike Gundy after a long stint in Stillwater, in a move that— as beloved as the former Cowboy quarterback has been at OSU— many fans thought of as a long time coming.

Gundy becomes the third coach fired this season, as Oklahoma State followed the lead of Virginia Tech with Brent Pry and UCLA with Deshaun Foster. While Texas A&M football no longer shares a conference with the Cowboys, there could still be some fallout from this decision for the Aggies before all is said and done.

Texas A&M's offense, coordinated by Colorado native and former Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, has been a revelation so far this season, with the young superstar OC putting together quite a scheme up to this point in the season. It's been so eye-catching, in fact, that this move by the Cowboys to fire Mike Gundy could end up meaning the Aggies have to sit through some uncomfortable speculation over the next few months.

Oklahoma State fires Mike Gundy, could be targeting Texas A&M OC Collin Klein as replacement

This move has been rumored for a while, but the loss to Tulsa last weekend seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back for OSU. Now, though, as they turn their sights on a coaching search, it could be College Station that they attempt to raid.

Klein's name has already been brought up as a potential replacement for Gundy, but there has not been any confirmed reciprocation of interest by the Aggie OC. Even if he interviews, of course, it's not a guarantee of anything.

The former Kansas State quarterback has been extremely selective in the past— it was nigh a miracle that the Aggies were able to pry him out of Manhattan when they hired him a couple of offseasons ago. Not only were they taking him from his alma mater, but he had turned down jobs like the Notre Dame OC position as well.

With the dysfunction up in Stillwater, I'm not sure that Klein will exactly jump at the chance to leave College Station. That said, I think it's possible we hear a lot of his name being mentioned for this position until it's filled— it's just a storm the Aggies will have to weather.
