Playoff implications: Texas A&M's comeback will make committee into hypocrites

The playoff implications of this win are pretty massive— but the committee likely won't give them their full due.

Texas A&M's magical comeback against the South Carolina Gamecocks not only proved their championship mettle, it captured the minds of neutral fans across the entire country. The Aggies showed the sport who they really are with their blazing-hot second half on offense, and their shutdown defense on the other side of the ball.

This win should sew up a spot for Texas A&M beyond all doubt, as they move to 10 wins. With Samford and Texas on the schedule, the Aggies' worst possible finish would be 11-1, which is not a record that will be left out.

It was truly a historic comeback, so as Texas A&M fans look forward to the College Football Playoff committee releasing their rankings here on this upcoming Tuesday, they are expecting that to be acknowledged in some measure. At least, it should be if the committee were to actually use equal weights and measures— but that's an unrealistic ask if history is any guide.

Texas A&M will make CFP committee into hypocrites once more if they don't move Aggies up to no. 2

It's funny— because of what has happened the last two weeks, the Aggies keep putting the committee in a situation where they simply can't win. They pinpointed the A&M defense as an issue in the first rankings, lauding Indiana in that regard; A&M puts out a great defensive game while Indiana struggles, and they praise Indiana's comeback.

Now, the Aggies have an even more impressive comeback to their name. So, if the committee truly meant what they said about Indiana and what they accomplished in their comeback, they will reward A&M as well and walk back their previous criticisms, right?

Except that's not what will happen. The committee will come up with some other cockamamie reason to keep the Aggies down at no. 3 for the third straight week, despite the Aggies continuing to show the committee better versions of exactly what the committee says separates the teams above them.

I'm not optimistic the committee will do the right thing, in other words. I'm pretty convinced that they won't. But all the Aggies can do is keep winning— next week at home against Samford, and then clearing out the corporatized concrete husk in the state's capital that they keep trying to pass off as a SEC home environment.
