Texas A&M Football Adds All-Conference Safety from Transfer Portal
S Trey Jones chooses Texas A&M Football over Georgia in Massive Portal Win
Texas A&M football has been absolutely on fire in the portal lately. After adding two needed players from the transfer ranks over the weekend in Cyrus Allen and Alex Howard, Mike Elko strikes again, this time adding former CMU safety Trey Jones.
Jones, a native of Wetumpka, AL, fought through some injury issues during his time as a Chippewa, but emerged as one of the top players in the MAC. He earned all-conference honors in both 2022 and 2023.
At a solid 6’2” and 215 LBs, Jones is a physical safety that can play down in the box with ease. He’s almost a ready-made replacement for Demani Richardson in that way—Demani too is almost a linebacker-safety hybrid in his build and skill set.
Jones will have one year of eligibility remaining. That he chose the Aggies over a place like Georgia—not only a program coming off of two straight national championships, but one much closer to his hometown—really speaks to the amazing recruiting job that Mike Elko and company did here in a short amount of time.
Jones joined Will Lee as transfer commitments in the defensive backfield, and is the 5th transfer commitment overall this cycle for the Aggies. He was a needed add, especially as—if the online predictions and recruitniks are to be believed—it appears that Oregon State CB Jermod McCoy, though on campus this weekend, is trending elsewhere.
I doubt the Aggies are done in the portal, but they already seem to have more difference-makers committed from the transfer ranks than at any point since the one-time transfer was approved. Mike Elko has done an impressive job in a short amount of time, and I’m excited to see what else he and his staff have in store.
