Transfer portal misses for Texas A&M football: DE Elijah Alston
Imagine if Texas A&M football brought in sack leaders from three different conferences via the portal this offseason. That was very nearly exactly what happened, as the Aggies had Marshall’s Elijah Alston committed—if only for a couple of days.
Maybe it was a backlog at the position that caused Alston to back off of his original verbal pledge, but it didn’t take long for him to apparently reconsider. I don’t think the commitments of Nic Scourton and Cashius Howell helped in that regard, either—some guys want to go to a spot where they’ll be the featured name at the position, and Alston would have been one of a couple of guys had he come to College Station.
Alston profiled much closer to Scourton than he did Howell, flashing the ability to play down in and down out rather than a pass-rush specialist. I’m not sure he would have started over either Scourton or Stewart—in fact, I think it’s kind of doubtful—but having this kind of talent waiting in the wings would have been a huge plus for the Aggies had it happened.
Alston ended up at Miami, like Sam Brown. The Hurricanes got a good one, but the Aggies obviously have a lot of talent at the position—that reality, after all, could be why Alston reconsidered in the first place.
