Texas A&M football: Edgerrin Cooper picked up by Green Bay Packers in second round of 2024 NFL Draft

Texas A&M football has had their first draftee selected in the 2024 NFL draft, as Edgerrin Cooper was selected by the Green Bay Packers at the 45th pick. Cooper is the first linebacker selected in this year's draft.

Cooper has been the top prospect on the Texas A&M football team since about the middle of this past season, where he really broke out. He ended the year leading the team in tackles with 84 to go along with 17 TFLs and 8 sacks. He also broke up 2 passes and forced 2 fumbles.

Cooper will have to battle for a starting spot with veterans Trent McDuffie and Quay Walker. Despite what the playoff game against Dallas may have seemed to local fans, the Packers did not exactly have a great defense last year—especially against the run—so Coop could certainly carve himself out a niche quickly.

Cooper possesses high upside as a pass-rusher as well as a run-stuffing LB, as evidenced by his sack and TFL numbers. That's another way he can add to Green Bay, as the Pack were middling in that regard last year, despite boasting Rashan Gary.

There was some thought Cooper could have risen into the first round after his stock shot up dramatically in recent months, but after no defensive players were selected in the first 10+ picks, that dream fizzled out quickly. Still, though, this is a great landing spot for Coop and I'm sure he will thrive with Green Bay. Congratulations, Edgerrin!
