Texas A&M football players with rising stock after spring football: Rodas Johnson

I need to issue a big time mea culpa on Rodas Johnson. Mr. Rodas, I apologize. I was not, in fact, familiar with your game.

I thought at best he would be a backup guy who could provide some needed seniority, leadership, and depth on the defensive line. I should have known better, given the school he was coming from! Wisconsin, after all, knows a thing or two about developing defensive players.

To be fair, some of this evaluation had to do with the prodigious talent already on campus for the Aggies. The top-line players at the position that the Aggies boast stack up favorably with pretty much any school in the country, so it’s somewhat reasonable to think that it would be hard for a less-heralded transfer to break into the rotation.

But Johnson has done just that. He brought with him an impressive work ethic and a strong resume, and has begun to work himself right into the mix up front for the A&M defense. He, too, had some impressive plays in the spring game, stuffing the middle of the offensive line several times and pulling off some intriguing pass rush reps.

Johnson’s emergence has made me feel a lot better about the interior of the defensive line. I still would like the Ags to pick up another piece in the portal, if I had my druthers, but I’m feeling more bullish about the depth now than I did before spring started.
