Texas A&M football players with rising stock after spring football: Daymion Sanford

Sanford, coming into Texas A&M in the class of 2023, seemed like he could be a longer-term project. His frame and physical tools projected as elite, but he had not played the position long enough to think he could jump in right away.

In that way, he was the opposite of Taurean York, in a sense: where York had question marks surrounding the way he projected to the next level physically, he had absolutely zero about his pure ability to play the position. He was a four-year starter at the highest level of Texas High School football, after all, and bore a reputation of being a very precocious player.

That’s not to say Sanford isn’t a high-IQ player, just less experienced at the time he came into college. Now, with a year under his belt, he appears to be beginning to break out. It was his emergence that was likely the catalyst for Alex Howard making the move to head to the portal after there was talk of the Youngstown State transfer possibly being a starter. If Sanford unseated him by outperforming him in the spring, it only makes sense that Howard would search for greener pastures.

We saw one huge play out of Sanford in the spring game, where he laid a huge hit on a receiver crossing the middle of the field to jar a pass loose. While he didn’t make any other splash plays throughout the day, he was solid in his reads and keys. His emergence is another one that would be huge for Texas A&M.
