Former Texas A&M football QB Max Johnson suffers season-ending injury in first game with UNC Tar Heels
Say whatever you want about former Texas A&M football QB Max Johnson, but you can't deny that he laid it all on the line for the Aggies. Over his two years in College Station, Johnson—not exactly the most elusive guy in the pocket—took more than his fair share of hits behind a porous offensive line, but he refused to stop playing until he absolutely couldn't keep on.
Unfortunately enough, that point came in both seasons he donned the maroon and white. Against Mississippi State in 2022, he broke his thumb when his hand came down on the helmet of a rusher in the pocket. In 2023, he suffered an injury on a quarterback sneak against Ole Miss that put him on the shelf for the rest of the year.
It made sense, especially given that Weigman fully took hold of the QB1 mantle this past year, that Johnson would seek a new start somewhere else. For his gutsy play and spirit, Aggie fans wished him well on his way out—which isn't always the case when you transfer!
Max ended up in Chapel Hill, where former Longhorn head man Mack Brown is now the head coach. After a long fall camp battle, he won the starting quarterback job for the Tar Heels, who played in their first game of the season last night against Minnesota.
Tragically, after suffering a season-ending injury in each of the last two seasons, Johnson was befallen by the same fate in the game last night. After being carted off with a lower body injury, it was confirmed today that he broke a bone in his leg, putting him out of commission for the year after he underwent surgery.
This is a heartbreaking moment for the former Aggie signal caller. Max is a really tough player, and I have no doubt he'll recover well, but you just want to see the guy get through a full year uninjured. Hopefully, that's what 2025 will hold for him.
