Former Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher implies he may be back in coaching soon; Where would he end up as a coach?
The last few years as Texas A&M football coach for Jimbo Fisher were not exactly pleasant ones. His reputation, which was iffy when he took the Aggie job yet repaired somewhat over the first few years in College Station, took a nosedive, as he became the butt of joke after joke.
The book on him now is that he is a brilliant mind that the game has simply passed by. His complex offense and commitment to it are the albatross he wears around his neck at this point in his career, as the Aggies’ underachievement over these last few years were mostly ascribed to those factors.
With all of this bad press over the last few years, it makes sense that Fisher is keeping his head low at the moment. After all, with the buyout he just received, he can afford to do whatever he likes with his time—there’s certainly no rush back to the field.
What may push him back, though, is the drive to achieve. Jimbo is a competitor—that’s something no one can deny. That fire is still yet alive, as on an ESPN radio appearance today, Fisher alluded to the fact that he’s already feeling the pull to get back on the saddle.
At this point, though, Aggie fans could be asking: what place would even take in a guy with Jimbo’s reputation? After what the fanbase has been through over the last two years, that’s an understandable question.
But let’s make the case. He’s still a plus recruiter with a lot of connections. There’s reasons outside of his offensive system (does that count as a pun?) that could be used to explain the Aggies’ record over the last few years—quarterback injury chief among them.
His name recognition is still extremely strong around the game. All of these factors could be enough for one program or another to look past the bad pub and pull the trigger on a hire. I’ll be interested to see where he lands if and when this comes to pass.
