Texas A&M football: Could Aggies be in the running for talented interior DL Johnny Bowens after he enters the portal?

One of the more hotly contested recruitments for Texas A&M football in the 2023 class was that of San Antonio DL Johnny Bowens. A one-time A&M commit, Bowens backed off his pledge prior to the tumultuous 2022 season—which obviously didn’t do much in the way of tempting him to reverse that decision.

Though he visited the Aggies late in the process, he ended up committing to the Oregon Ducks. Given his high upside as a defensive lineman, this was one of the more disappointing outcomes for A&M in the previous cycle.

Now, though, it appears that he is back on the market. According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Bowens has filed the paperwork to enter the transfer portal.

Given the close involvement he had with the Aggies out of high school, and the need that A&M has for depth at the position, you have to think that Elko and company will be involved here. It would certainly help to shore up one of the thinner units on the team—not to mention being an infusion of impressive talent.

Of course, there’s the difficulty that Elijah Robinson, who would have been his position coach and recruiter out of high school, is no longer in College Station. Sean Spencer is no slouch when it comes to recruiting, though, so if Texas A&M football wants to be involved here, I have confidence in him.

It’s still early in this process, but I’d hope the Aggies kick the tires here. This seems like a tailor-made situation for A&M to bolster their team at a position of need, and for Bowens to get playing time at a school close to home.
