LB Harold Perkins, former commit to Texas A&M football, describes why he flipped to LSU on signing day

The 2022 recruiting class, depending on which Texas A&M football fan you ask, is either a point of pride or a sore spot. It showed the heights that the Aggies can rise to as a program on the trail when things are going well, but it certainly did not come without its fair share of controversy.

Even with the success that the Aggies had in that class, however, they had two big misses: OT Kelvin Banks, now of Texas, and LB Harold Perkins, now of LSU. These were the two big areas of need on that Aggie team, and A&M struck out on both five-star prospects.

More painfully, both have become bona-fide stars at their eventual landing spots—which just so happen to be the Aggies’ two chief conference rivals, as the Longhorns have now joined the SEC. Now, A&M has ended up fine at both OT and LB—in fact, their team captains come from each of those positions—but missing on top-line talent like that is always chafing.

At SEC Media Days this week, Harold Perkins, who was representing LSU, was asked about why he ended up flipping to the Tigers after initially committing to the Aggies.

The star LB for the Tigers was never going to address the rampant rumors of a big NIL play that have surrounded this eventuality, so this was the most you would get out of him about the decision.

Perkins played it cool here, but close followers of Aggie recruiting well remember what happened after he announced for the Bayou Bengals on signing day. A video went viral of him celebrating with his family and burning at Texas A&M hat—which didn’t sit well at all with many Aggie fans.

It’s more fuel for the rivalry, of course, which I’m not complaining about at all. Ever since Sumlin left the Aggies, this has been one of the more competitive series in the sport. The Aggies’ results in this year’s edition thereof will go a long way towards deciding what kind of season this is in College Station.
