Ignominious former Texas A&M football coach lands announcing job with ESPN
Former Texas A&M football OL coach Steve Addazio lands announcing job with ESPN
If you asked any Texas A&M football fan what their number one complaint was about the team at any point over the last two years, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who didn't answer with something about the offensive line. After the excellence we saw out of the unit in the 2020 season, the past two years have been not only a regression—they've, on the whole, been an embarrassment.
That two-year stretch happened to coincide with the tenure of one Steve Addazio as the position coach for the Aggie offensive line. Texas A&M football fans were keenly aware of that fact—all you need to do is browse Aggie Twitter during a game to see that much.
It was also not lost on A&M fans that the team had lots of raw talent—Addazio was certainly a plus recruiter. Yet it was constant mental lapses that seemed to plague the Aggie front. That seemed to point the finger almost entirely at coaching, placing Addazio in the crosshairs of criticism.
The point is this: there were not very many tears (of sadness, anyway) shed when it became clear that Addazio would not return to College Station this year. Fans were more than happy to usher him to the proverbial door. Where he may land was of little concern among the ranks of A&M fans as long as it was not back in Aggieland.
Then, today, came the announcement from ESPN that they had hired Addazio as a TV analyst for their network. This... raised some eyebrows in College Station.
Well, some of the responses were creative, at least!
Maybe Addazio turns out to be a wonder on the broadcast. But I'm not sure this will be appointment television for many of the Maroon and White faithful.
