Making the argument: 3 reasons Texas A&M football should stick with Conner Weigman

Even though the Texas A&M football fanbase is abuzz about Marcel Reed, the Aggies need to stick with no. 15.

3 reasons Texas A&M football should stick with Weigman: Clearly the better passer

The same cannot be said of the passing game. The ceiling of the quarterback when it comes to tossing the rock opens up the offense far more than his ceiling as a runner.

And in that vein, Weigman has Reed, at this point in his development, beaten every single day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Look at the one common data point that we have: McNeese. I know people will attempt to simply write everything off that we saw in that game, but that’s foolish to do. Weigman, apparently with an injured shoulder, scored touchdowns on each of the team’s first five drives. Those drives included some extremely impressive and accurate deep balls.

Reed, on the other hand, looked extremely sketchy, even when he was playing with the first team against McNeese. He benefitted extremely from a porous Gator run defense last week and was asked to do very little in the passing game.

Because of that, when he did drop back, it was in prime conditions. A team with a bad pass defense was loading up against a run game they couldn’t stop. And still, nearly half of his passing yards came on one busted coverage. It’s not like he was even picking UF’s secondary apart.

Reed’s progression work is nowhere near Weigman’s. I saw some fans claiming the touchdown to Theo was a third progression; after watching back, I think it was his first off of some eye candy from Klein. Weigman, as you would expect, is much more advanced in that area.

The Notre Dame game looms far too large in the minds of many fans. There’s simply no evidence to say that that is who Weigman is going forward; in fact, the more recent evidence would suggest the exact opposite.
