Mike Elko staying secretive about Texas A&M football’s quarterback situation despite providing health update on Conner Weigman

The debate between Conner Weigman and Marcel Reed for Texas A&M football fans has been raging for days now ever since the latter led the Aggies to a convincing victory over Florida in the Swamp.

In fact, many Aggie fans, disillusioned with Conner Weigman’s performance against Notre Dame, have begun to call for Reed to be the guy going forward. I’ve contended that those people are missing the forest for the trees a little bit, as I think Marcel’s game against UF proved not quite as much as some are claiming.

In any case, the key piece that fans are waiting on at this point is an update on Conner Weigman’s health status. It was reportedly an injured throwing shoulder that kept him out against UF, and with Bowling Green coming down the pike, fans want to know who to expect.

Elko had no update during his presser on Monday. However, the weekly SEC coaches’ teleconference call took place today, and he was again asked about the status of the man he and his staff tabbed as the starter this season.

I understand the gamesmanship with regard to the starter, but this is a pretty solid update for Weigman in my book. If it’s anything with the AC joint, then working through the pain in practice is the toughest piece; being able to throw at this point will be harder than on game day when he’ll have more pain management techniques available.

The question remains, though, whether he still has his job. I find it highly unlikely, objectively speaking, that he has lost it at this point, but if Marcel comes out this weekend slinging it all over the yard (which I doubt will be the offensive approach) and throws a bunch of touchdowns, then it may be more of a discussion.
