Power ranking the SEC after week 1: No. 15 - South Carolina

b. Previous ranking: 12. . . . . . . 15. 533

The Gamecocks didn’t look a whole lot better than the Gators overall, but they still escaped week one with a win. Old Dominion was the preseason 111th-ranked team per SP+, and Carolina somehow turned their game against the Monarchs into a nailbiter.

The offense looked positively listless in this one. LaNorris Sellers was having accuracy issues, which allowed ODU to sell out against the run. To top things off, freak WR Nyck Harbor, one of the top reasons to be optimistic about the Gamecock offense, may have been injured later on in the game.

If there’s one bright spot, it was the brilliant play of 5-star DE Dylan Stewart. The freshman pass rusher graded out as the top player in the nation this week at any position group.

The Gamecocks will have to figure something out quickly with a visit to Lexington, KY upcoming. We’ll know soon if they were affected by a little bit of a lookahead syndrome in this one, or if their poor showing against ODU is a sign of bad things yet to come.
