Power ranking the SEC after week five: Alabama-Georgia heavyweight clash yields new number one amidst conference-wide shakeup

Well, with college football week five now complete, we have one game of the year behind us—with doubtless several more to come. The sport never fails, folks.

It's hard to imagine things turning out better for aficionados of the sport than what we saw on Saturday night. That was a true heavyweight bout, and though it looked like it may be noncompetitive for a while, it ended up being a real nail-biter.

So, after that and all the rest of the action from the weekend, how does the conference shake out? Who moved up and who moved down? Let's take a look around the SEC and do some power ranking.

Power ranking the SEC after week 5: #16 - Mississippi State

Mississippi State continues to look absolutely horrendous this year. After Blake Shapen went down last week, pretty much all hope of getting a conference win went out the window for the rest of this year.

That said, this was a slightly better performance than what we saw last week against Florida. I’ve been sounding the alarm on this Texas team for quite some time, so I don’t want to say I didn’t expect it, but I don’t think most expected State to look better against the Longhorns than they did against the Gators.

Things were pretty close in the first half—it was a one-point game with under a minute to go before halftime—but MSU ran out of gas late. There’s still a lot more they need to do if they want to move up here, but this is a positive start.
