Power ranking the SEC after week four: Tiers beginning to form even as lower ranks undergo shakeup

Week four of the college football season has come and gone, and in this two-bye-week year, we have some of the SEC teams seeing their first week off. Most of them took the field, however, and we saw some great matchups—and some of the final non-conference games for certain teams.

Tennessee and Oklahoma led the way, of course, while Missouri and Vanderbilt was a surprisingly fun matchup. The Tigers are starting to become a point of concern given their performances to start the year, which is reflected in the rankings here.

So, how does the SEC shake out after week four? Let's take a look.

Power ranking the SEC after week 4 - #16: Mississippi State Bulldogs

. . . 530. b. Previous ranking: 16. 16. . .

This is looking to be an extremely difficult first season for Jeff Lebby. Not only did the Bulldogs lose the SEC game they had perhaps the best chance to win, but State is now without their quarterback for the remainder of the year.

Blake Shapen, the Baylor transfer who had looked impressive at times for this Mississippi State team, suffered an injury against the Florida Gators that will reportedly sideline him for the rest of the year. That’s a really tough break for the Bulldogs.

Now, Mississippi State heads to Austin for a very challenging matchup. Texas has had the benefit of playing complete cream puffs so far on their docket, and State has given us no indication that they will put up any better fight than ULM, UTSA, or Colorado State.
