Report: Texas A&M football RB Rueben Owens suffered "lower body injury" during fall scrimmage; Could be done for season
Texas A&M football appears once more to be snakebitten when it comes to their fall scrimmages. Only a year after rising star TE Donovan Green went down with what turned out to be a torn ACL in a fall scrimmage, reporting is now emerging that the Aggies have once again lost a big offensive contributor to injury in the same timeframe.
Rueben Owens didn't always have the easiest go of things last season, but those who watched closely could tell his potential. His pure numbers didn't quite stack up against Le'Veon Moss or Amari Daniels, but his home-run ability and prowess as a pass-catcher projected well to future growth.
It now appears that that growth will be delayed. Max Olson reported today that Owens suffered a "lower body injury" in scrimmage, and that he is set to miss the season.
Since there's no official word yet on timetable (or even the nature of the injury) from the Aggies themselves, I can't say whether or not that projected recovery is accurate. However, I don't think Olson would be reporting it if this was completely baseless; in other words, it doesn't look great for Owens.
The Aggies will have to pivot now with a running back room still without an alpha and now featuring fewer options. Luckily, the Ags brought in EJ Smith from Stanford during the winter portal window, so that helps cushion the blow a bit.
While I didn't have Owens slotted as a starter, this is still a pretty big loss for the Ags. Especially with the grind of an SEC schedule, you need depth in your RB room, and the Aggies featured three great runners at the position. They should be fine as long as no more major injuries occur, but they're on thin ice at the position now.
