Texas A&M Aggies news: Is Trev Alberts waffling on A&M AD job after initial reports?

As I wrote this morning, reporting emerged that current Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts appeared set to take the same job with the Texas A&M Aggies. At that point, though, the unanimous accounting was that, while a deal was not yet officially reached, it was certainly "expected."

Now, hours later, things are still not official. And as the minutes pass, they remain so. And this waiting period seems to have at least given a glimmer of hope to Nebraska fans.

Is this a cause for concern? Probably not. While it is legitimately, actually true that Alberts "hasn't made a decision yet" in the sense that the pen has not been put to paper, that doesn't mean that he is somewhere, wracked with guilt and indecision, pacing back and forth, toiling over his indecision over which multimillion dollar job to accept. Well, I guess he might be, but I'd give that a low chance of being accurate. I'll say it that way.

Rather, I think this is just dotting I's and crossing T's. This story was definitely a leak rather than an announcement, which means that, while it was confirmed, it's not necessarily to be expected that the final announcement is imminent within a matter of hours.

What this does show, especially judging by the responses of Nebraska fans, is the potential of this hire. When the Aggies hired Ross Bjork away from Ole Miss, there was next to no fight from the Rebels, and the fans were more than happy to see him leave. Given how his tenure went, that's a reaction that makes sense.

When fans are upset like this, it's a good indicator—not infallibly so, but rather reliable—that the hire is a solid one. After all, no one wants to hire a guy that nobody will miss. You want to get the guy who people don't want to see leave! That is certainly the case with Alberts.
