Texas A&M baseball could be the first team ever to achieve this unbelievable stat

For everything this historic Texas A&M baseball team has achieved, there is a remarkable stat that is flying a bit under the radar.

Texas A&M baseball officially finishes regular and postseason undefeated in non-conference play; first team ever to do so?

When Texas A&M baseball knocked off Rice in their final midweek game of the season, all the way back in early May, they sealed the deal on an undefeated non-conference slate in the regular season. This, in itself, was impressive enough; it was only the third time a team had done so since 2015, when the Aggies pulled off the same feat (Virginia did it last year, as well).

However, the Aggies may have just sealed a record that has never before been accomplished: not only did they go undefeated in the regular season against non-conference opponents, they have notched an undefeated postseason record as well. Now that Florida State has been eliminated, the only possible team that the Aggies could lose to is the Tennessee Volunteers.

It’s hard to find records keeping this kind of information, but this very well may be the first team in college baseball to ever pull something off like this. Considering how difficult it is to stay on top of your game during some of these midweeks against opponents looking to slay a giant, it is exceedingly rare to make it out of the regular season with an unblemished record in such games.

Adding in how seldom teams go undefeated in the postseason, given how the difficulty ratchets up, I really think this could be the first time we’ve ever seen something like this happen. Even Tennessee, the juggernaut that the Aggies are about to face, dropped a game to Evansville in the Super Regional (and arguably should have also dropped one to FSU in the College World Series as well).

For however impressive this is—and it is extremely impressive—going undefeated in the non-conference is not the ultimate goal here. That’s to win a championship—and the Aggies are two wins away from doing just that for the first time ever.
