Texas A&M baseball eyes commanding lead in CWS bracket; can they take control by beating Kentucky?

After a dramatic win over the Florida Gators, Texas A&M baseball hasn’t had much time to rest before another high-level SEC opponent has come down the pike. This time, it’s the Kentucky Wildcats, who the Aggies have yet to face this season.

With the size of the conference and the retention of divisions in baseball, the Aggies don’t face every single SEC team in a regular baseball season, just like football. Because of this, they did not end up seeing the Wildcats in the regular season, and with their quick exit from Hoover, they missed them in the tournament as well.

Big Blue is not a team that boasts a lot of top-line talent, but they have come by their College World Series berth honestly. They rode their stellar record to the 2nd overall national seed, one notch ahead of the 3rd-ranked Aggies. They have 46 wins to 14 losses on the year, and, like the Ags, have yet to lose a game in the NCAA tournament. Something will have to give tonight.

As I say, their talent can’t quite stack up to the Aggies, but this is a team that is playing together and playing well. The Ags will have the best player on the field talent-wise in Jace LaViolette, but that sometimes doesn’t matter quite as much as you’d hope in the game of baseball.

A lot will fall on the shoulders of tonight’s starter, Ryan Prager. Prager has been excellent so far this season, but he has had some troubling starts as of late. If he can summon his top form, it will be tough for even this explosive Kentucky lineup to plate many runs.

When you get to Omaha, the competition is on a whole different level, as you should expect. However, this Texas A&M baseball team, having been through the grind of an SEC regular season, is well-prepared for this moment—to that point, it is a very realistic possibility that they only face SEC teams during this entire CWS run.

Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 6 PM. Hopefully, we don’t see another four-hour weather delay, and we can get this one played on time.
