Texas A&M baseball falls to Tennessee to go o-fer in SEC tourney; Is there cause for concern with the Aggies?

Texas A&M baseball concluded an inauspicious stint in the SEC tournament today with a loss to the Tennessee Volunteers by a 7-4 mark. After yesterday's 5-3 loss to Mississippi State, today's result means the Aggies are headed back to College Station without a single win in Hoover.

As I said yesterday, the way this tournament went would not be determinative of the Aggies' place in the NCAA tournament—that much had already been secured. Even so, going two-and-done is not something that garners a lot of confidence in this team ahead of the Aggies hosting a regional.

Let's give a quick rundown of the last few weeks for Aggie baseball. The trip to LSU began poorly, with back-to-back 6-4 losses on Friday and Saturday before the Aggies finally burst out with a 14-4 win on Sunday. The Ags made quick work of Rice at home, 16-3, in a midweek game before heading to Oxford to take on the Ole Miss Rebels.

This road trip was even worse, though the record read the same. A close 4-3 loss on Friday gave way to A&M's worst loss of the season on Saturday, 10-2. The Aggies won a 6-0 decision on Sunday, but 2-4 in the last 6 conference games furrowed the brows of many Aggies.

The Arkansas series helped turn morale around somewhat for A&M fans: the Aggies handed the Hogs the first loss in a Hagen Smith start for the entire year in game one, a 1-0 thriller in 11 innings. The Hogs bounced back to win 6-3 on Saturday before the Aggies run-ruled them 14-4 in the rubber match.

It felt like the Ags had momentum headed into Hoover, but now they've lost two games in which the offense again looks sluggish. Is there something wrong with this team? Did they already reach their peak?

If there's a reason for optimism here, the Aggies are virtual locks to host both a regional and super regional, and they remain superb at home. A 32-3 record in Olsen is nothing to sniff at, and the Aggies have yet to lose a series at home.

Hopefully some big games at home can help the Aggies get their mojo back here in the postseason. The big win total in the regular season is great, but this Texas A&M baseball team has looked primed for a deep run this whole season—it would be flatly disappointing if they bow out early.
