Texas A&M baseball: Evan Aschenbeck named Stopper of the Year by National College Baseball Writers of America
A lot has been made about the power hitting of this Texas A&M baseball team (for good reason, too), but this Aggie squad would not be in Omaha if it were not for some dynamite performances on the mound. Perhaps the most reliable arm on the team is reliever Evan Aschenbeck, who has delivered time and time again for the Aggies.
For his dominating performances on the mound and his steady hand, Aschenbeck has been named the 2024 Stopper of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers of America.
As the press release states, Aschenbeck (a native of nearby Brenham) has recorded nine saves this year to lead the SEC, posting a 6-1 record on the season. He leads the nation in ERA at an impressive 1.66, Opponents only bat 0.185 against him, and he has notched an eye-popping 72 strikeouts as compared to only 8 walks in his 65 innings pitched.
When Aschenbeck takes the mound, it more often than not means the opponent is done scoring for the rest of the game. This kind of weapon is invaluable for the Aggies; not only Aschenbeck’s talent ceiling, but his dependability and reliability make him one of the best players in the entire nation.
This is an honor consummately well-deserved by the lefty. He has shown up time and time again for the Aggies this season, and he should be recognized for his excellence. If the Aggies have any hope of going far in Omaha, Aschenbeck will no doubt be a huge piece of that effort. Here’s hoping we see his dominance continue to shine forth on the mound over the next week or two.
