Texas A&M baseball set for huge showdown with Longhorns in regional play tonight; Can Aggies move to 2-0 against Texas this season?

Back in march, Texas A&M baseball made their way down to Austin for another edition of their rivalry with Texas on the diamond. The Longhorns had designs on upsetting a top-10 Aggie squad, but the A&M offense was far too much for David Pierce's crew, with the Aggies cruising to a 9-2 win.

After that point—and, reading the tea leaves, even beforehand—these seemed to be two teams headed in completely opposite directions. The Aggies continued to ascend, moving as high as #1 in the nation in the polls. For the Longhorns, however, it looked like the bottom was falling out.

Near the end of the season, though, things began to turn. The Aggies stumbled a bit in their last few series, while the Longhorns began to put things together, enough to earn a tournament bid as a three-seed.

Now, the two will face off again. After Texas A&M baseball defeated Grambling yesterday, and the Longhorns took down Louisiana-Lafayette, the two will face off in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination regional tournament.

So, can the Longhorns reverse the result this time? While we certainly can't say that they stand no chance—baseball is a funny game, and it's not like this is some mid-major we're talking about here—they do face long odds.

The bats of the Aggies, though they have not exactly been brimming with power as of late, still have the potential to put up a huge number for A&M in any single frame. Can the Longhorns do the same against this Aggie pitching staff? That may be a bit of a tougher ask, given the talent on both sides.

This isn't a winner-take-all game, but the team that emerges victorious will certainly have an inside track. The Aggies and Longhorns will play tonight at 8 PM CT.
