Texas A&M baseball downs Florida to move to College World Series final; Aggies and Volunteers face off for national title

You read that right, Texas A&M baseball fans: this team is about to play for a national championship. For the first time in the history of the program, the Aggies have advanced to the College World Series final after defeating the Florida Gators for the second time in three games.

It wasn’t just a defeat, either: it was a domination. The Aggies jumped all over the Gators, who were playing what was essentially the back half of a doubleheader after defeating Kentucky earlier in the day, and didn’t let up for nine innings.

Starter Justin Lamkin again was brilliant, recapturing the magic that he put on display last weekend against the Gators with 9 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. Reliever Chris Cortez struggled briefly, walking a couple of batters, but it ended up being no trouble at all for the Aggies. Josh Stewart replaced him and was just magnificent, notching 4 strikeouts of his own.

Now, the biggest test begins. The Aggies have two days off before the College World Series finals begin on Saturday, where they will face off against the Tennessee Volunteers. This will be the toughest hurdle yet to clear, as you might expect given that it’s the championship series, but this is an Aggie squad talented enough to bring home the win.

What would a win in this series mean? How about the first championship in the big three sports for the Aggies in just under a century? It’s nigh unbelievable the way that Jim Schlossnagle has jolted this program to life in just three years to get them to this point. With a guy like that at the helm, not to mention the assemblage of talent up and down this roster, I’d be hard-pressed to believe they’re anywhere close to done.
