This Texas A&M baseball team looked like the #1 team we saw midseason again, going undefeated in the College Station Regional.

Texas A&M baseball sweeps Grambling, Louisiana, Texas; Aggies will face off against Oregon in supers

Ahead of Texas A&M baseball’s first game of the College Station Regional, I wrote a piece wondering whether the Aggies could recapture the midseason magic that vaulted them to the top ranking in the polls. I thought they would need it, or something very much like it, in order to get to the College World Series.

Step one towards that goal is accomplished, and emphatically so. The Aggies swept the regional over the weekend, defeating Grambling, Texas, and Louisiana en route to the Super Regional round.

It wasn’t always a foregone conclusion, of course. An extra-innings thriller against rival Texas had fans on the edge of their seats. A defensive masterclass on both sides endured into the late College Station night until the Longhorns finally blinked—three times, actually.

That was as close as the Aggies came to losing a game, however. An 8-0 shutout against Grambling in game 1 was over about as quickly as it began, with the Aggies putting up 7 runs in the second frame, and the game against Louisiana went A&M’s way before long as well.

Now, the Aggies await the Oregon Ducks. The Big 10’s newest member (which will be made official in very short order) swept through their own regional, but as the #3 seed, defeating the likes of UC-Santa Barbara and the University of San Diego.

The Ducks will have a much taller task on their hands when they come to College Station. The Aggies still have yet to lose a single game to an out-of-conference opponent, and have only lost three at home all year.

The final game had some great signs moving forward for the Aggies, as well. It looks like they were able to finally get Braden Montgomery going after a slow last couple of weeks, and Hayden Schott broke out of a slump in a big way against the Cajuns as well.

The Aggies are two home wins away from their second College World Series berth in three years under Jim Schlossnagle. Nothing is easy in the postseason in college baseball, but you have to like the Aggies’ chances.
