Zhuric Phelps from SMU commits to Texas A&M basketball

Texas A&M basketball gets their third portal commit, and this one is from an in-state school, SMU. Zhuric Phelps announced on his social media that he is headed to College Station for his senior year and final year of eligibility.

The junior guard averaged 14.8 points, 2.7 assists, 4.1 rebounds and just under 2 steals a game this past season at SMU. The 6'5 guard spent his first three seasons of his collegiate career at SMU before transferring to A&M. The former SMU coach is now the head coach at Rice.

Phelps is a native of Midland, TX where he played high school hoops for Duncanville. His senior year of high school they went on to win the Texas 6A State Championship. Zhuric was also named "Mr. Basketball" his senior year.

Phelps was a three year starter for the Mustangs and received Second Team All-AAC honors as well. After the 22-23 season, Phelps had entered the NBA draft but ended up returning to SMU for his junior year. The 6'5 guard is explosive and can get downhill in a hurry. He likes the mid range jumper as well as drawing contact underneath the basket. I see him playing the SG or 2 position right alongside Wade. Him and Wade Taylor IV will be a scary backcourt.

This is a huge pickup for Buzz and staff, and it'll be interesting to see who else they can pickup. So far, they have picked up three guys from the transfer portal.
- Pharrel Payne (Minnesota)
- CJ Wilcher (Nebraska)
- Zhuric Phelps (SMU)
