First Texas A&M basketball game against Texas Longhorns set for January 4th, according to multiple reports

As first reported by veteran college basketball reporter Jon Rothstein, Texas A&M basketball is set to face off against the Texas Longhorns for the first time as SEC conference foes on January 4, 2025. This game will be another landmark in a highly-anticipated renewed rivalry in the Lone Star State.

Texas A&M basketball and Texas have actually met a few times since the former left the latter behind en route to the SEC. The Aggies won the first matchup since the break in 2015-16 by an 84-73 mark; the Longhorns took the follow-up game two years later by four points. Texas again triumphed in Buzz Williams’s first season, 60-50, in an early-season matchup in Fort Worth.

Of course, the NCAA and others have been trying to match up the Aggies and Longhorns in postseason play during that time frame as well. Even though there have been a couple of years where it has seemed on the verge of happening, though, it has never quite materialized.

While three meetings is a good sight more than the zero that the football programs have had, it’s still not very many. It seems that the Aggies and Longhorns now, though, will see each other as often as any teams in the country: going forward, they will play at least twice a year.

Some Aggie fans will doubtless be upset that the only visit the Longhorns will make to Reed Arena in 2024-2025 occurs over Christmas break. Even so, it’s a heck of a way to kick off conference play—and even though not all of the student body will be in town, I think we will see a rocking and rolling home environment nonetheless.
