Texas A&M football in a high-stakes battle with West Coast program for two five-stars
Texas A&M football locked in a battle with the Oregon Ducks for five-star defensive backs Jonah Williams and Trey McNutt
If there’s one thing that new Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko is known for, it’s his proficiency in coaching defense—specifically, defensive backs. A former DB himself, Elko is a wizard when it comes to the defensive secondary; just look at the development of Donovan Wilson or Antonio Johnson.
With that in mind, it makes sense that his would be a favored system in the eyes of high school recruits at the position considering their college choice. It has been a boon so far for the Aggies on the trail, helping land guys like Cobey Sellers, Adonyss Currie, Deyjhon Pettaway, and Jamar Beal-Goines.
The Ags are looking to put together a big class in Mike Elko’s first year at the helm, and are well on their way to doing just that. To put the finishing touches on it, though, there are two recruitments that will be extremely key.
Jonah Williams and Trey McNutt are two high-end players at the defensive back position who have shown a strong interest in the Aggies. Being so highly-regarded, however, both are being pursued by every program in the nation. Reportedly, though, each is down to two finalists: the Aggies and the Oregon Ducks.
This won’t be an easy battle to win for the Aggies, even though Williams hails from nearby Galveston. The Ducks have punked the in-state Texas Longhorns for several big recruits recently, leaving the recruiting staff in Austin licking their wounds. The Ags have won their most recent showdown with the Ducks, however, landing LB Noah Mikhail.
These are two extremely key recruitments. How the Ags fare will go a long way in determining where this class finishes.
