Elko: Weigman practicing, Texas A&M football ‘hope’ to have him back for Arkansas
Texas A&M football has been navigating the past couple of games without their starting quarterback, Conner Weigman. The backup, Marcel Reed, has been filling in over the past two weeks, notching a pair of wins over Florida and Bowling Green.
In the former game, he looked fantastic. In the latter game, he struggled. Now, I think there’s a decent explanation for that fact, but both the great performance and the poor performance are being used as ammunition in a still-raging battle of opinions among the fanbase on who the starting QB should be.
There’s been no indication of a battle at signal caller from the ranks of the coaching staff, however. The weekly depth chart release continues to list Weigman as the top option at the position, and neither players nor coaches—including Reed himself—have given any indication that Reed is the guy going forward.
Weigman’s status being in limbo, however, has certainly impacted things. However, it looks like that limbo might be over sooner than some thought.
On the weekly SEC teleconference call, head coach Mike Elko revealed that Weigman may be available this Saturday against Arkansas.
This would be a huge boost to the Aggies, as you might expect for any team getting their starting quarterback back from injury. The strength of the Arkansas defense seems to be against the run game, too, so adding a vertical threat back in would do a lot for the Ags.
Billy Liucci mentioned that he expects Weigman to still be a game-time decision for this one, but it’s at least encouraging that he’s getting this close. Here’s hoping we see no. 15 ready to go on Saturday.
