Texas A&M football official two-deep takeaways: Depth chart reveals several surprises
Texas A&M football’s initial two deep reveals positions still in flux, surprise starters
The first two-deep of the year has been officially released by Texas A&M football, and as you might expect, there are more than a few “OR”s listed here. The Aggies have several positions up for grabs, and as we draw closer to kickoff, the competition for those spots has only grown more heated.
Aside from those contested slots, there are a few surprises here as well. We’ll get to those in a second, though: let’s take a look at the spots that are still to be determined.
- Backup LG: Kam Dewberry OR Aki Ogunbiyi
- Starting C: Mark Nabou OR Kolinu’u Faaiu
- Starting RT: Rueben Fatheree OR Dametrious Crownover
- Backup TE: Shane Calhoun OR Donovan Green OR Theo Ohrstrom
- Backup Slot WR: Micah Tease OR Izaiah Williams
- Backup QB: Jaylen Henderson OR Marcel Reed
- Backup RB: Amari Daniels OR EJ Smith
- Backup DT: Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy OR Rodas Johnson
- Starting DT: David Hicks OR Albert Regis
- Starting LB: Solomon DeShields OR Daymion Sanford OR Scooby Williams
- Backup LB: Tristan Jernigan OR Jordan Lockhart
- Starting NB: Tyreek Chappell OR Jaydon Hill
- Starting CB: Tyreek Chappell OR BJ Mayes OR Jayvon Thomas
- Starting CB: Will Lee OR Dezz Ricks
- Starting S: Dalton Brooks OR Trey Jones OR Marcus Ratcliffe
That’s a lot of ors. Here are the takeaways for me:
Texas A&M football depth chart takeaways: Moose Muhammad not ready yet?
it looks like Moose Muhammad has not quite announced himself in the way that we thought he might have over this fall camp. He’s still listed as a backup at this point, but over the course of the season that is obviously subject to change.
Moose is one of the most talented players on this entire roster. Per many reports, and what we’ve seen, the only guy holding him back is himself. He has the ability to be a star in this league, and I’m hopeful to see that come to pass—he just has to go out and take it.
Texas A&M football depth chart takeaways: Forgotten men pushing for starting spots
Some names I’m glad to see competing for starting positions are Rueben Fatheree, Albert Regis, and Jaydon Hill. These guys are pushing the established starters here.
I expected them to flex Reed-Adams out to tackle, even though he’s better suited at guard, due to the battle going on inside between Faaiu and Nabou. I think keeping him inside is the better long-term decision, as I’m high on Fatheree’s long-term potential.
Regis continues to make noise. Hicks is a guy that many think is a star in the making, but no. 17 won’t go away in this battle to start up front. That’s only good news for Aggie fans.
The same could be said of Jaydon Hill. A very physically talented player, Hill had a tough go of it last year at Florida. If he can give the Ags some solid snaps at nickel, they’ll be in great shape.
Texas A&M football depth chart takeaways: Defensive backfield still in flux
The most ORs on the whole depth chart come at the DB spots. However, I think this is actually a sign of something very positive.
The talent and depth at DB has taken a massive leap since last year. It’s clear that there are many, many options about which this staff would feel great. The one guy to have his name etched in stone as a starter here is Bryce Anderson—we could see a healthy rotation everywhere else.
While there may not be many answers here for who will trot out with the first team on Saturday, this is educative insofar as it helps Texas A&M football fans know the lay of the land ahead of game action. I expect at DB more than anywhere else that we see some solid rotation throughout the game—and the season.
