Texas A&M football rumors: Will Conner Weigman be ready to go against Missouri Tigers?

There’s been a lot of discussion among Texas A&M football fans about the Conner Weigman - Marcel Reed dilemma. Some want Reed to be the guy going forward, some are ready for a return to Weigman.

I feel like I’ve made my personal position pretty clear: while the future is no doubt bright for Reed and he has made a few plays, he is simply not strong enough in progression work, downfield passing, etc., to really make opponents respect that aspect of the offense. For that reason, I favor Weigman once he’s healthy.

But it’s that last part that’s a bugaboo for the Ags. Weigman has already missed significant time, and it’s been tough to get a bead on when he may be returning.

However, some murmurs have begun to emerge that Conner Weigman may be ready to play against the Missouri Tigers. First, it was Bud Elliott of the Cover 3 podcast on a Missouri show, mentioning that he “had a feeling” that Weigman may be ready to go. Then, Josh Pate said something very similar on his show last night (12:40 in the video).

The Aggie coaches and staff have not said much themselves, as you’d expect to be the case. For his part, Billy Liucci said yesterday morning on McElroy and Cubelic that Conner had not yet practiced “as of ”; however, the wording was ambiguous enough that it could have meant something akin to “as of my latest information, updated at some point Monday.”

Is that too much of a stretch? Maybe. You don’t have to be too conspiracy-minded to understand why it would be an advantage for A&M that Missouri doesn’t know who is starting at QB, so it wouldn't be unexpected (if he was actually ready to start) that it would begin to come out from the national guys rather than those closer to the program.

I think Weigman gives them a significantly better chance to win this game than Reed does. We’ve seen defenses begin to make Marcel more and more limited, despite the strivings of Collin Klein—Reed just isn’t quite ready yet. Here’s hoping no. 15 is ready to roll on Saturday.
