Texas A&M football’s Weigman, Green named to Comeback Player of the Year watchlist
Texas A&M football: Aggie signal caller Conner Weigman, TE Donovan Green named as players to watch for Comeback Player of the Year
Almost without exception, Texas A&M football fans are expecting QB Conner Weigman to have a huge year behind center for the Aggies. There’s been a steady stream of hype around #15 that is beginning to burst into a river of chatter around his evident aplomb at the position.
Of course, the elephant in the room is the fact that he has only notched eight starts so far in college. This is due to a combination of factors; Jimbo refused to start him early on in 2022 (which, in all honesty, could have been the right decision at that point in the year), but injury to both Haynes King and Max Johnson pressed the young Weigman into action.
What we all saw against Ole Miss in Conner’s first start felt revolutionary. After weeks of a slog at the quarterback position, things finally felt… easy. Even though the Ags ended up losing a close game to the top-15 Rebels, doubts about Weigman were all but erased with his 4-touchdown, 0-interception performance.
From that point on, the excitement would only grow. Piloting the Aggies to a win over #6 LSU at home was a bright ending to a terrible 2022; going into 2023, the fanbase was abuzz about what Conner could do in a new offense.
And he certainly delivered, ranking fourth in QBR (which, yes, is opponent-adjusted) in those first four weeks. It was that fourth game, though, that things went south. A free blitzer broke through the line and tackled Weigman low, which immediately and clearly injured him. Further testing revealed that this was an injury that would keep him out for the year.
With Conner’s skill level and rocky path thus far in mind, it makes sense that he has been named as a player to watch for the Comeback Player of the Year award. Donovan Green, the skilled Aggie TE, has also been named—Green played all of 2022 but missed the entirety of last season with an ACL tear in fall camp.
Either of these guys would be worthy choices for the award with a big year. And, with Collin Klein at the controls, I feel sure that a big year is incoming for this Aggie offense.
