Three bold predictions for Texas A&M football this fall: Can Elko lead the Aggies to the promised land?
It is now officially game week for Texas A&M football. The preseason is over and done with after Week 0 has come and gone, and it's now time for the Aggies to begin their trek to late November and beyond, starting with this Saturday's matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
This is a time full of hope for fans and opportunity for the team. With such a high-profile game in week one, the Aggies can really grab the limelight with a big win, further giving energy to the talk of this turnaround that Mike Elko has been engineering.
Of course, it's a long season. It doesn't all come down to one game. But this could be a flashpoint in a year that the Aggies hope to have as a bounceback campaign, following two seasons of disappointment.
Looking ahead to the 2024 slate, though, it's time to make some bold predictions for what we may see out of this Aggie squad. We'll revisit at the end of the year, but as things stand right now, I feel these all have a good shot at happening.
Bold predictions for Texas A&M football in 2024: Aggies have a top-15 scoring offense
In the six years that Jimbo roamed the sidelines in College Station, the Aggies finished in the following positions in scoring offense (measured by points per game):
- 2018: 19th
- 2019: 62nd
- 2020: 37th
- 2021: 56th
- 2022: 101st
- 2023: 25th
Aside from the shocking revelation that the best years for the Aggie scoring offense were Jimbo's first and last seasons, that just won't get it done for a program that has championship aspirations. There are more precise statistics to measure what the issue was with the Aggies, but this one simply needs to be higher.
I think the Aggies can improve upon last year with Collin Klein at the helm—and improve significantly. A&M notched 33.3 points per game last year; top-15 would have been 35.9 or higher. They were not that far off; with an improved system, they can really make some noise.
