Texas A&M football spring game takeaways: Weigman needs time to heal, but glad he was out there in the spring

This one is a bit of a "no duh," but I think it's worth saying. Weigman's performance yesterday was statistically pretty unimpressive, but he was clearly still recovering from that injury he suffered against Auburn last fall.

It wasn't helped by the fact that he had a monster by the name of Nic Scourton breathing down his neck nearly every time he snapped the ball, but I think his injury clearly hampered his play. He moved outside the pocket pretty minimally, and had some trouble finding targets downfield thanks to some sticky coverage. He delivered some on-target balls to guys underneath that were broken up by defensive backs, and there were a few drops.

Even though he didn't look in tip-top shape in this one, it's still an unmitigated good that he participated in spring. For one thing, it shows that he is on track to return in full measure this fall; for another, he got a lot of reps in Klein's new system.

We won't see the true power of the Klein-Weigman combination until August 31—and I'm actually fine with that. I think there will be a little bit of an element of surprise when the Fighting Irish come to town.
