Fall camp position battles for Texas A&M football - Safety
I think it’s a safe assumption that Bryce Anderson has one of the spots on the back end of the defense locked down. #1 on the defense is slated for a huge year in the Maroon and White, and under Elko’s tutelage, I think he’ll become a household name sooner rather than later.
The other safety spot, though, presents an interesting battle. On the one hand, you have the young gun Dalton Brooks, who did nothing but flash sky-high upside in the bowl game. He was laying the wood both deep down the field and when he was asked to come up and defend the run, and he showed great coverage skills on his interception.
Then, you have the experienced Central Michigan transfer Trey Jones. A sixth-year player, Jones is a guy that has been capturing the attention of the insiders as a guy many are sleeping on coming into the year.
The pedigree of Brooks is hard to move past, but I think we see Jones come out with the starting group against the Golden Domers. However, I think this is a place where we see a heavy dose of rotation throughout the game and the year.
Elko has built a defense—a secondary, specifically—where there is a high level of versatility, and he can mix and match personnel depending on the situation. Jones may end up the starter, but Brooks will see his fair share of snaps without a doubt.
