Fall camp position battles for Texas A&M football - Linebacker
This is another one where you have an obvious starter already on campus. There’s no denying the big time hit that Taurean York was on the recruiting trail, with the former three-star already having been named as the top linebacker in the state by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football after his freshman year at A&M.
The other spot, though, is very intriguing. Daymion Sanford, by all accounts, is beginning to come into his own at the position. He came into College Station as an absolute athletic anomaly, but one who was a bit raw at linebacker.
If he is learning to properly parlay those gifts into the position, that should be extremely encouraging to Aggie fans. However, a spring portal arrival in senior Solomon DeShields may be tough to overcome.
With the departure of Edgerrin Cooper, the Aggies need a veteran presence at the position. Of course, York’s maturity makes it such that A&M practically already does, but you can’t overlook the experience that DeShields brings to the table.
I’m not sure how to call this one. I’d be happy with either as a starter, but I have a sneaking suspicion that DeShields would not have come to College Station without at least knowing he would be heavy in the rotation for the Ags. That doesn’t necessarily mean he starts, but I think we see a lot of him this year.
