Upset alert: Tracking the most dangerous trap game for every SEC team in 2024
Which are the biggest upset opportunities that each SEC football team should watch out for?
Part of what makes college football great, especially in the SEC, is big time upsets. The NFL is famous for their "any given Sunday" mantra, but while the talent differential is far greater in college football than the big leagues, this actually makes the upsets—which happen often!—that much more exciting.
Of course, everyone likes being the team pulling off the big win, but it's absolutely gut-wrenching to be on the other side of things. As we look down the SEC schedule this fall, fans have already identified some prime candidates for "trap games," especially for the top of the conference.
In this article, I have chosen a trap game for every single team in the conference. I'm looking for games that the squad in question feels like they are chalking up as a win as they look over their 2024 slate, but one that might be tricker than it initially looks. This is harder for some teams than others, since there are a few great teams with very favorable schedules... and also a few teams that are very bad and won't take any games for granted as a fanbase.
There will be a few teams that pop up several times on this list—to be clear, I'm not chalking up each trap game as an automatic—or even likely—loss for the team in question, but one that could be difficult for any number of reasons. With all that said, let's jump in, starting with... Vandy.
Trap games for every SEC team - Vanderbilt Commodores
Is this disrespectful? Maybe a little bit. But at the same time, this is more so the result of the Commodores likely not being favored in any of their games.
A trip away from home to play an opponent like GSU is not something you see often in the SEC, but Vandy is a different animal than most. They’re addicted to the grind!
Don’t get me wrong, the Panthers are not good. They’re one of the lesser-talented programs in the nation, not to mention the fact that they’ve had a turbulent offseason as well. But if we’re looking for games that the fanbase is taking for granted, this is a prime candidate for the five Vanderbilt football fans that are out there.
