Who is the backup QB for Texas A&M football? Underrated battle raging behind Weigman
Will Marcel Reed or Jaylen Henderson win backup QB job for Texas A&M football?
Over the last couple of years, the question of who the backup quarterback is has become all too relevant for Texas A&M football fans. Ever since 2021, the Aggies have lost their starting signal-caller for the year every single season, usually before they've even finished half of their games.
Fans are hoping that the Aggies will fare better in this upcoming year health-wise, especially with QB Conner Weigman set to light it up in the SEC in his junior year. If he can remain upright, he is slated to announce himself in a huge way to the nation.
Of course, that's a pretty big 'if'. The Aggie offensive line hasn't been great the last couple of years (to put it lightly), and while the change in coaching overall will likely make them markedly better, fans are still anxiously considering what might happen if Weigman gets hit one too many times.
If such an eventuality were to occur, however, the Aggies would have quite the talented backup no matter what. Both Jaylen Henderson and Marcel Reed, in the action each saw last year, were impressive; Henderson was a revelation for the offense in the Mississippi State game and Reed flashed big time against Oklahoma State.
In fact, if I were to guess, OC Collin Klein may be developing packages for one or both of these guys to use regularly in games. He used multiple QBs at Kansas State, and with the talent that both Reed and Henderson bring to the table—especially in the run game—I have to think that he will leverage that at certain points.
If I were forced to pick between the two right now, though, I would go with Reed. He really showed fans something with his arm in the bowl game, and by all accounts, he's been progressing quickly even as just a redshirt freshman.
The Aggies are certainly lucky that Henderson stuck around when he had the opportunity to transfer, but I've got Reed winning the battle for QB2 behind Weigman. No matter what, though, I think we see all three regularly throughout the year thanks to Klein's creativity and a couple of blowouts.
