Why Texas A&M football is far from sunk at running back after Rueben Owens injury

Losing the young star stings for the Texas A&M football running back room, but the Aggies have the ability to bounce back.

Even without RB Rueben Owens in 2024, Texas A&M football still can have a productive running back room

With the unfortunate news coming down today of a potentially very serious injury to rising sophomore running back Rueben Owens, Texas A&M football fans are understandably upset. However, some of the despairing that's been going on out there is probably a bit premature.

Yes, Owens was set to have a breakout season in the minds of many. You could see his five-star potential turning into actuality the further on last season went, and with his versatility and ability to catch passes out of the backfield, you could see well his place in this Collin Klein offense.

That's all very true. Even so, though, the Aggies still have plenty of weapons at the running back position.

For all the potential that Owens has, I did not have him as a starter. That's because of the demonstrated value of Le'Veon Moss—who, though he has struggled with his own injuries, is an absolute beast when he gets it rolling. I think this new-look offense will benefit him as much as anybody.

And then, there's the man who many have forgotten—a guy who will be all too happy to remind A&M fans of just how good he really is. Amari Daniels was actually the leading rusher for the Aggies last year, looking absolutely brilliant in stints, and will have an increased share of the carries without Owens in the mix.

These two have a bit of a thunder and lightning combo going which will be a valuable dynamic for the Ags. Of course, there's the transfer EJ Smith, who just so happens to be the son of the all-time leading rusher in NFL history. As polished of a receiver as he is a running back, Smith adds another dimension to the Aggie offense that will be valuable.

All this to say, the Aggies are not exactly sunk without Owens in the backfield. Hopefully, his prognosis is positive and he will be back sooner rather than later, but even if the rumors are true and he misses the season, the Aggies still have some good options in the backfield.
